Well-known Bharatanatyam dancers, Roja Kannan & Uma Namboodiripad Sathyanarayana Share their thoughts with us.

Roja Kannan, Bharatanatyam dancer, guru and President of ABHAI

For me, the lockdown has been a time to take care of my health. I attend my yoga classes online now. Most importantly it's been a time of bonding with my mother, which otherwise was not happening because of my crazy schedules. Another important work during this period is with ABHAI and our relief work. I have been talking to artists, trying to understand their problems their facing now.
I have also had time to index and arrange all my dance books! It has also been a time of introspection; on my dance journey, my research and learning.

Uma Namboodiripad Sathyanarayana, Bharatanatyam dancer, senior disciple of Chitra Visweswaran and dance musician.

For me, it has been a time to bond with my daughter and parents, something that hadn't been happening especially the last year and I realized that I have been running a lot, sometimes in the same place? In fact that is the question that has sprung up for which I am trying to find answers.

Have been using this time to delve into a lot of  reading, practicing, singing and playing the veena ( something I never gave time to), my new found craze for Sanskrit literature, I always loved it and want to delve deeper, cooking and finding joy in small things.

There are still a lot of questions regarding what our purpose as artists, performers is, where are we headed and realization of the fact that we as humanity have a huge responsibility towards ourselves. Sometimes we tend to be happy in our little worlds but this quarantine has pushed me to question and reflect upon a lot of things. Still finding answers but enjoying the process.
